OUR STORY

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.

Hebrews 12:1

We have a rich history of people who are passionate about God. We’d love you to be part of our story!

The first St Barnabas church, dedicated in 1899, was a corrugated iron structure in Hook Road. In the early 1900s a group of 5 psychiatric hospitals was established in the area (the Epsom Cluster, which became the largest in the world), prompting the development of Epsom.

By 1908 the church had become too small, so a new building was constructed on land donated by Basil Braithwaite. Because of lack of funds one of the bays at the building’s West End was omitted and replaced by a simple common brick wall which was not in keeping with the locally made bricks. The church was dedicated in June 1909 by the Bishop of Winchester but it could not be used for marriages until 1912.

The first vicar was Rev A E Fraser, an ex naval officer. In 1920, an organ was installed and by 1921 the vicarage had been built. The Parish hall was completed in 1925. During the Second World War the church hall became an emergency shelter and feeding station, but was not much used.

In 1949 a fund to complete the West End was started but building work only began in 1965. It was completed in 1968 at a cost of £26,000 to designs of one of the church wardens, architect Bernard Dowland.

The 1968 West End was modified with the addition of a very distinctive modern glass extension built in 2004.
